Choices

So far, I have really enjoyed reading Plain Text Essays by Nancy Mairs. It has definitely been one of the more interesting books we’ve read in this class for me. All of the essays have stood out to me in some way, especially because of their rawness and honesty. However, there’s been one line specifically that’s stuck with me throughout all the reading. “– but each will have to choose his way of being for himself.” This line really hit me hard, especially since I don’t really have any idea of what my major is or is going to be. So many times already I’ve had people asking me questions trying to talk me through my thoughts and help me to decide what I want. I find that to be the most annoying thing in the world, because honestly, I really just don’t know. That’s why I’m undecided. I found comfort in this passage because eventually I will choose my way of being for myself. No one can or will do it for me. It was a reassurance for me that I have that control over my life, and I can experiment, and try, and be whomever I want. That’s the nice thing about college. It’s a lot easier for me to do that here than it was back at home.
